Conexión Jaguar, una apuesta por el planeta
It is one of the largest projects supported by the Program outside of Colombia. In the area where this initiative is being developed, there is a high diversity of endemic and endangered species of fauna and flora, one of the most important biodiversity hotspots in the world.
ISA’s flagship sustainability program and its technical allies South Pole and Panthera are now supporting more than 61.000 hectares in the REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) project managed by Biored, an organization that carries out forest conservation activities in the Ucayali region of Peru.
The importance of this initiative lies in its location, which comprises an area of the Peruvian Amazon rainforest, consisting of 9 concessions that make up the project for the conservation of dense evergreen forests, that is, forests that keep their leaves all year round, a characteristic of the tropical region. These areas have large carbon storage capacity.
“This is the second largest international project supported by Conexión Jaguar, with which we expect to contribute to the reduction of 513.905 tons of CO2. For us it is a great satisfaction that the goal we set ourselves for 2030, to reduce 9.000.000 tons of CO2, has now been met by 3.137.126 tons, which represents more than a third of the global goal,” explains María Adelaida Correa, ISA’s corporate director of sustainability.
According to biological studies of four conservation concessions conducted by Biored, a high diversity of fauna and flora species with some category of threat has been found. Among the fauna species are the jaguar or otorongo (Panthera onca), tapir (Tapirus terrestris) and giant armadillo (Priodontes maximus). Cedar (Cedrela odorata) and Mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) are some of the flora species recorded.
Panthera researchers installed more than 50 camera traps in two concessions totaling 20.000 hectares to study the conservation status of medium and large vertebrates. Through photographic and video records of the fauna, the presence and abundance of the animals in Biored’s concessions is expected to be known.
Conexión Jaguar, a commitment to the planet
By the year 2030, the Program has set the goal of conserving 400.000 hectares of forest comprising the Jaguar Corridor in Latin America, through 20 projects. With this objective, Conexión Jaguar opens, once a year, the Call for Forestry Projects in Colombia, Peru, Brazil, and Chile.
